Grace grew up in Te Aroha, a small, picturesque country town nestled under the hills of the Kaimai Ranges of the East Waikato region of New Zealand. Her family were all musical, the piano being the main focus of everyday life. To play the piano was the most natural thing to do as were competitions and exams, radio recitals and local performances.
After marriage to a dairy farmer Grace purchased an old caravan, had a piano attached to the axle and became a mobile piano teacher visiting local country schools. This was all a great help to the parents who were involved with milking cows who also wanted their children to have the benefit of lessons.
In 1982 Grace had the opportunity to attend Auckland University to do a Bachelor of Music in piano performance. The following year was spent at Teacher’s Training College gaining a Diploma of Teaching. It was at this time that Grace became interested in the philosophy of the music teaching of Doctor Shinichi Suzuki. The concept of the mother tongue approach, playing before reading, was new and enlightening.
Several years of part time study with trained Suzuki trainers gave piano teaching a completely different perspective which continues to inspire and motivate. This Suzuki approach has also given Grace the opportunity to travel around New Zealand doing workshops as well as an opportunity to do a workshop for teachers in Shenyang, China.
A highlight was a visit to Japan to visit Matsumoto, the home of Dr. Suzuki and to attend their Summer School.
Grace continues to teach from a studio in her home on Auckland’s North Shore.
